Week 58, Day 3: Utterly destroy them

Today’s Reading:  Deut 7:1-26

Some thoughts from today’s reading…

Moses tells the sons of Israel that when they enter the land they are to make sure to destroy the inhabitants completely.  They were not to leave anyone, make any covenants, or show any favor to them.  Moses tells them that if they fail to do this that problems will arise.  If they intermary with them then their sons will be led off into following other gods.  They are not to covet the silver or gold idols they find in the land either.  They are to destroy these things as well.

Moses tells them that they are going to be driving out seven nations that are greater and stronger thn them.  This is impressive to think about.  Physically they could never have taken the land on their own.  And yet they were going to be possessing this land soon.  God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His lovingkindness (9) would be with them.  He would be fighting for them and driving these nations out from before them.  Moses also tells them that if they question in their heart how they can dispossess these people, they need to remember what God did to Pharoah in Egypt (17-18).

Question:  What lessons can we learn from God defeating these seven greater, stronger nations before Israel?
