Some thoughts from today’s reading…

This chapter tells us about one who has taken a Nazarite vow.  This can be a man or a woman.  This person has “separated himself to the Lord,” vs. 5.  He was not to have wine or strong drink, not to shave his hair, nor to eat any grapes (died or just grape juice, not even eat the seed or skin of a grape), he was not to touch a dead person for whatever length of time he had dedicated himself to the Lord.

I have sometimes wondered what the point was for someone to take a nazarite vow.  My best guess is that this could be a time for the person to focus their attention on drawing closer to God.  Kind of like a time where we might dedicate ourselves to prayer and fasting.  The length of time is not specified so it appears to be up to the individual how long he will pledge to keep the vow.  I think that it is interesting that at the end of completing his vow he was to shave off the “dedicated head of hair,” vs. 18.

Question:  Who is a very well known judge who was a nazarite from birth and kept the vow for most of his life?
