Lessons From Lot PDF Print E-mail

As I have been reading from the book of Genesis over the last couple of days, several thoughts occurred to me. In Genesis 13, Abraham and Lot separated from one another, with Lot choosing to move his family toward the city of Sodom. Abraham, in the meantime, moved toward the Oaks of Mamre, near Hebron,  and continued to live in tents. By Genesis 18, God decided that He would destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah because of their wickedness. Abraham, in an effort to save his nephew, Lot, bargained with God about saving the cities. He started by asking if God would save the cities if there were 50 righteous persons located there. He eventually whittled that number down to just 10, but even that could not be found, and God proceeded with His plan to destroy these wicked cities. Of course, God did make provision for Lot, making a way to escape the destruction that was to come.

Whom Should a Christian Marry? PDF Print E-mail

As an evangelist, I often have discussions with young people about the relationships that they are involved in, whether it be friendships or dating. As I am now the "old guy" in these discussions, I have often run into disagreements with these young folks. The question often comes up: Is it ok for us to date non-Christians? Unfortunately, when that question comes up, it is usually too late—they are already in such a relationship! I have had disagreements with young people, and also with their parents over this important question. The practice is usually being defended under such premises as:

  • They are in love! How can that not be right?
  • They are going to convert the person they are dating…if not now, after they are married!
  • There aren't any Christians close by to date…
  • They aren't getting serious…
  • They'll be a good influence on those around them…

Religious Reformation PDF Print E-mail

Recently, we have been studying the Minor Prophets in our Adult Bible study on Sunday mornings. We recently started a study of the prophet Micah. As I was preparing to teach this lesson, I came upon a quote by Homer Hailey in his commentary on the Minor Prophets. He was commenting on the nature of the people during the time of Micah, and how they were not what they should have been, even though they had some pretty good kings (such as Jotham and Hezekiah). Hailey's analysis on the matter was this:

"Micah seems not to have been very deeply impressed with these reforms. Religion had become a matter of form with the people; ceremonial observances were thought to meet all religious requirements. The reform was not from the deep recesses of the heart. There was widespread misapprehension that as long as the external acts of worship were scrupulously performed the people were entitled to the divine favor and protection."

Homer Hailey, A Commentary on the Minor Prophets, (Religious Supply, 2000), 189.

What Does the Bible Say About...Baptism? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Kris Brewer

There are, throughout the religious world, many different beliefs concerning the practice of baptism.  Some teach that baptism is optional, an outward sign that they have already been saved.  Others believe that baptism is necessary.  Some even believe that baptism is something that is not longer to be practiced for any reason.  Some believe that baptism should be immersion, while others believe it can be sprinkling or pouring of water on the head of the recipient.  With so many different beliefs, how can one know what they should do?  The only solution is to turn to the pages of the New Testament and allow them to dictate what is required.  What does the Bible say about baptism?

One Church is as Good as Another PDF Print E-mail

A couple of days ago, I had the opportunity to visit a gospel meeting and hear Paul Casebolt present a lesson on the church. He made a point in the sermon in a way I had never really thought of before. It made me think about how many people approach the task of “picking a church.”

We often hear people in the religious world tell us that “one church is as good as another.” The point they are trying to make is that you can pick any church you want, and God is happy with any decision you make. However, this is one of those instances where actions speak louder than words! Once a person makes a choice, they have determined that one church is indeed better than another! They have implemented some kind of criteria to determine which church they want to attend, whether they realize it or not. The bottom line is that they have determined that the church of their choice is better than all other churches, for one reason or another.
